Stump Grinding

Our standard grind is 6 to 12 inches below the surrounding grade, which is usually enough for sod, mulch, or a new planting bed. Some sites need more depth because of construction, irrigation, or replanting plans. We confirm the target depth and any buried utilities before the grinder starts.

After grinding, we use enough of the chips to backfill the hole and leave the area level. The remaining material can be collected for haul-away or kept for mulch, depending on your preference and the amount produced. We will review the cleanup plan with you before work begins.

You can often plant grass or a small ornamental after grinding, but putting a new tree in the exact same spot is not always ideal. Remaining roots, settling chips, and the old root flare can affect the planting hole. Tell us what you want to plant so we can recommend the right depth and location.

Standard stump grinding removes the stump and the major surface roots that the machine can safely reach. It does not excavate an entire underground root system. If roots threaten a foundation, driveway, irrigation line, or planned construction, we can assess whether targeted root work or full extraction is the better approach.

Grinding time depends on stump diameter, species, root flare, access, and how deep the area needs to be cleared. A small, accessible stump may be finished quickly, while a large hardwood stump or a group of stumps takes longer. We can give you a practical time estimate after seeing the site.
